Irish Ayes in the Mud Hole 7-22-09
« on: July 22, 2009, 08:34:09 PM »
Johhny Oz and Bob G met me at my house this morning for a planned fluke trip. I had listened to the weather report and heard 5 knot west wind. I figured this would amount to a lot of skates and few fluke.

Armed with this information I asked if they would be willing to do a mud hole shark trip. Their response was an immediate YEAH MAN!!!

Made it to the boat in record time and loaded up. Pulled out of the dock and broke the inlet to be met with a two foot swell. This made for quick running out to the monster ledge.

Out to the ledge and set up our three lines. Has a so-so drift, enough to keep the lines away from the boat and the chum flowing out instead of down.

We had two run offs shortly into the drift. Johnny Oz got on the rod for both. The first run off was a decent sized fish according to John. The second run off was a smaller fish. Neither one was seen.

After a fairly long wait the short rod starts peeling out line. We give John his third try on this fish. After a brief fight the fish comes to the side of the boat. About a five foot brown shark. Released and we get the line re-rigged and back into the water.

There were several hammerheads around and in our slick for a good part of the day. At one point we see a dark shaddowy object in the water and I pitch a line out to it. The line sits there for a bit and then starts to move. The dark shaddowy object inhaled the bait and took off. I brought this shark, another small brown, to the boat and we get another release. This makes us two for four on bites.

Not a bad day on the water. The ocean was flat except for the small ground swells. The weather was beautiful, not much sun but enough to keep us happy and no rain. At one point we had three whales coming out of the water and heading straight for our boat. They turned off about a half a football field length away never to be spotted again. Also got to see a sea turtle on the way in. Hoping to get to the hole again on Sunday.
