Saturday's fluke attempt. 7/24/09
« on: July 26, 2009, 11:14:30 AM »
Had my normal Saturday crew out. Went south to the Sea Gert Reef after listening to the weather report calling for 15+ south winds in the afternoon. Tired of getting beat up on the way in.

Made our first stop on the north side of the reef. Had a south wind pushing us to the north and a current that was pushing us to the south. They evened theirselves out and gave us a 0.1 knot drift, causing us to pretty much sit in one place.

Made many moves looking for a spot to catch some seabass with the poor fluke drift. Every spot we hit we were getting small sea bass and skates. We did catch a few short fluke, but certainly not as many shorts as typical.

The afternoon did bring a strong south wind. The fishing did not get any better and the wind and seas were getting worse so we decided to pull the plug on the trip.

Total catch for the day...two keeper sea bass and a decent size ling. Many skates and a few short fluke.

Was going to do a shark trip this AM. Woke up at 445, checked the weather report, looked outside and then made phone calls cancelling the trip. Turned out to be the right thing to do as ten minutes after I got off the phone a thunder/lightning storm came rouring into town.

Will try for fluke again tomorrow and shark on Tuesday.

Not a problem Mark. The "W" bomb is not evil.  >:D  Ahgggggg. Just so happens, I was at my trailer earlier this evening and got a phone call from my wife. Said the big tree in my back yard came down. Actually, was taken down by a neighbor's even bigger tree. Now the trees are laying across six yards. Each yard is about 18' wide. Took down several fences and an above ground pool. Not to mention an SUV that got crushed. Had to cancel tomorrow's trip to deal with the situation.  :P

I was watching it on the radar going through out there.  Pretty nasty, I think there was a tornado warning for parts of the western state.  Not good.   :P

5hrug I fished the Sea Girt Reef on Saturday as well. Same outcome. I was entered in the Pt. Pleasant Elks tournament. Lots of skates and short fluke. We had a few sea bass but not many. Mostly small ones. Not a single keeper fluke. Joe, I thought I saw you out there as I was heading out to some deeper water. No luck there either. Keep trying because it beets working.  chrz
