Late mud hole report
« on: July 30, 2009, 09:28:17 AM »
Tuesday, June 26...Had Capt Mike, Hunter2 and Bob G on the boat. We made a bee line to the mud hole with shark in mind. First looked at the oil wreck area. The water temp was 75 degrees. Figured this was way too high for mako so we went further to the Arundo. Temp there was 76. Made our way to the north east side of the Monster Ledge where we have had action on the past two trips and set up for shark (water temp was still on the high side, oh well).

Had a tail on one bait bitten off, more than likely a blue fish. No run offs.

Late in the game Capt Mike saw a mahi mahi cruising around the boat. Looked to be about 15 pounds or so. Threw some jigs and bait at it. Capt Mike finally hooked up with it on a strip bait. The fish took off and snapped the leader. Not long after the fish came back. Again it took a strip bait. Now the fish took off and made two jumps clear out of the water. The second jump was all that was needed to remove the embedded hook from it's mouth. The fish was never to be seen by us again.  :P

Pulled our gear in and went on the troll. Trolled around many fish pots without success. Got into some open water heading to another set of pots and saw a horrendous splash on our spreader bar. Alas, no hook up. Later into the troll we had another hit on a further back spreader and the line starts peeling out. The fish never took the hook and was gone.

That was all the action we had for the day. Fortunately, the weather was great and the company was even greater. Will be out Saturday trying to find some keeper fluke. Not many weeks left before the season ends.  :'(
