A kayak Trip To Remember
« on: August 17, 2009, 01:16:27 PM »
On Saturday I took my new girlfriend out kayaking for the first time..... what a beautiful day for being out on the water....

We started out around 8:00am and the wind was lite with some crystal clear water in the back country of the Barnegate Bay.....

While out we had the chance to see Bluefish feeding on some small bait on the surface.... We saw some cool turtles sunning.....

What a day on the water....We came around this small Island which blocked the lite wind that was blowing.....and the water was like glass....just as calm as can be.....

While we paddled around the Island....we saw a small fin come up about 50 off the front of the kayak..... Right away she was like get me out of this place...... I'm still not sure what we saw.
But I do know it was a fin out of the water.

We then started to head back....again another fin but this was more like a bone fish tailing on the flats.....we started to paddle close because I needed to see what this was..... We got right up to this fish which was tailing.....

At first I thought it was a bass.....But the tail was just not like a bass....We are almost up to this fish.....all I keep hearing from her is no way,no way what is that thing.....We got the kayak up along side this fish....which his nose was at the front of the yak and the tail was in the center of a two person ocean kayak.... I never in all my years of kayaking seen a fish that looked like this......what a site to see....just swimming along side my kayak in the back country.

What we came across was a HoundFish.... But from what I'm told only get to be 3-4 feet long.....This fish was every bit 5 plus and thick.....

After he did see us.....he hits the kayak hard enough to rock us.....This was a big,big,Houndfish.......

All in All we had a great trip with a story to come home with that will last a life time with both of us....

Sounds like a great day on the water!  Does this houndfish look like a gar or needlefish?  Never seem one before, but I think I know what you are talking about?

That is one cool looking fish.  I guess you could use them as a weapon plus the teeth are awesome.

I hope you still have a girlfriend after that.  Those things have some nasty looking teeth, like needles... :P

We both had just a blast.... I tried just telling her what kayaking was all about.... But now she really understands why I do this all the time...... I think she is hooked

Nice Dave! t^

I always see the little guys (8"-12" fish) that hang around the docks.  But I've never seen a really big one in person.

I'm sure there were more plentiful years ago, because I remember Walt at the old Forked River B&T talking about them.  He told me that people would accidentally run over them and that the impact was so hard that it sometimes even caused damage to the boat! cfzd
