question for captains

if you watch deadliest catch and notice what the round thing on the farwest leaders window is please fill me in

I see there are some wires going to it. I figured it was some sort of microphone to hear the deckhands?!?

If you are talking about the round thing on the window in front of the wheel it is used to keep the windshield clear.  The round glass spins very fast to keep the spray and water off so you do not have to wait for wipers to clear or wait for them to get blasted off from a rogue wave.

I do not know the name of it only what it does.

yeah I thought it was a microphone that focused on the deck to help deckhands communicate with the captain without having to press any buttons.

Usually the Loudspeaker on board most vessels of that type have built on microphones for that purpose it is called a "hailer" and lets the captain hear as well as shout out with his mike over the PA system.

Hi Paul,

You are correct and it is my favorite toy on the boat. It is great because most folks have no clue they are being listened to. It is also funny to watch people's faces when I have someone talking to me through it. They think the guys are nuts.

Hi Ed,

Sounds like fun.  Yeah, I've been around boats all my life it seems. My dad was into fishing and we always had a boat it seemed and my stepfather was a naval Commander. Submariner, so I have been brought up and around some really neat gear some old some very new.

In fact (short story) my stepfather was the one who spotted former Pres. Bush when his plane went down in the pacific.  He was aboard the Finback at the time.

I have the commissioning pennant for the Brill another boat he was Commander of.
