Gulf of maine sharkin
« on: August 28, 2009, 09:58:38 PM »
Had the opportunity to go shark fishing this weekend for the first time. headed out of The Saco River in southern Maine on a gorgeous friday morning. Good wind to start the day and just for miles off we saw a nice thresher in the surface but after trying decided he wasnt to hungry and continued on to our destination 20 miles off. with the nice seas and cruising it only took about 40 minutes to get where we wanted to go. Got the chum slick going and ten minutes later had our first hook up, I got to fight the first monster, and ten minutes later I lost my first shark!.  nosmly. shortly after loosing that we hooked up again and got this one to the boat a nice fish probably just over 200lbs. We would soon find out that this would be how the day was going to go. Fish after fish after fish There was enough blue sharks for everyone that wanted some. We constantly had fish around the boat, after landing a bunch of fish and multiple double headers, we started running out of bait. Late in the day some of the blues started thinning out and we were able to get a past them and into some deeper water. it was getting late in the day and we were about to pull up to try trolling for some mako's when all of a sudden the deep line starting hissing. finally after about a 5 minute run the fish had slowed and the fight was on for capt. Ed. after about a half an hour we got our first glimpse of what we hoped would be a nice mako, however it turned out to be the biggest blue shark we seen that day. After taking our time measuring and calling around on the radio to see what had been caught we decided to keep the monster. Once we weighed in we quickly found that this was the biggest fish weighed in yet at 418lbs. As of right now we stand in first in the tourney but with Danny blowing in tomorrow it will be an interesting finish with the tough weather.

Days end we ended up catching and releasing around 12 Blues. My first offshore fishing trip was awsome, lots of fish, good company and great weather. We'll see what tomorrow has to bring!
