Three of us left Atlantic Highlands at 6:00am and headed for the ammo pier. Fished among the gathering crowd for about an hour without much success, theirs or ours. We bounced around inside and out for the rest of the morning picking shorts At 12:30,we finally found a good shot of fish in the Ambrose Channel.
We worked the middle of the channel for about 2 hours and put 27 fluke, including 3 keepers 18.5-20.5", in the boat. Even the shorts were bigger, about 15 inches compared to 10-13 inchers we caught elsewhere.
Long strip bait worked best, blues or robbin.
We also boated 4 blues, the largest was 36.5"!
About 2:30 it got really rough as an East wind picked up. We finished the day in the Reach along with most of the fleet. We picked up another 12 "really short" fluke and headed in about 5:30pm. A long "one last shot" for one last doormat.
Can't wait for next season!
