Hi wood,

One thing to think about ... Don't limit yourself just to Sarasota. Will you have a car?

Right now, there is very good fishing for sea trout and reds in Charlotte Harbor (a little less than an hour South). I like to fish in the Tampa Bay area as well.

I would research which type of fish I want to catch. Then you can zero in on an area. For instance, I like to shrimp for Sheepshead (they are good eating and hard to hook). You do not need a charter for them, just a pier or bridge to fish on.

If you plan to fish for grouper, I can tell you that most of the keeper grouper are found a good distance offshore. The rules make it hard to find keepers close to shore. You can still have a lot of fun and action, however, tablefare may not be coming your way.

You can probably catch jacks or ladyfish anywhere near structure without a boat.

So, choose the kind of fish. See if it is "in season" (I can help you with that) and then set out a plan from there.

BTW, go to Venice Beach. You can get fossil Sharks teeth there by digging in the sand at the edge of the water. They have a cool technique for getting them. It is fun and fairly close to Sarasota.

Have fun,

Ed
