New lures and colors
« on: November 12, 2009, 07:37:05 PM »
When a new lure or lure color comes on the market do you buy and try it?
If so when do you give it a try, on the slow days when nothing else is working or when just about anything works? How does a new lure make it to the top of your choice list?

I normally figure that these new lures are made to attract my wallet not fish. I do however watch to see if something works and then will purchase it.( ie. Red hooks and lures) A lot of times I go to the tackle shop and look, then have a friend of mine who makes lures duplicate it.
I'm pretty set in the way I fish and when I do discover that a new lure or method works I'll give it a try. If it works for me I'll use it, otherwise it's just in the bottom of the tackle box as a maybe.
Good things come to those who bait

If so when do you give it a try, on the slow days when nothing else is working or when just about anything works? BOTH

How does a new lure make it to the top of your choice list?  Obviously, if they catch.  They also must fit my style of fishing.  Butterfly jigging is a good example of this for me.  They catch fish and I love jigging with them. t^

I love trying any and all new stuff out there! ;D

There are two kinds of saltwater fishermen. Traditional guys tend to be bait oriented and never vary and they catch fish. THen there's the other guys. Let's call them progressive minded fishermen. I have some of that in me. I fish the surf for stripers and blues and have a collection of artificials. Some are my favorites and some are still in the package. My attitude is "everything works" when the fish are there. Fish hard, have fun  ;D

I have my favorite and go to lures that I regularly use in certain colors.

HOWEVER, I like to try out new lures.  I don't like to spend tons of money on lures, but when I have to I will.  I figure, if I would spend $25+ on bait, there is no difference if it is a lure instead.

I will try out new lures for the first time when it is slow.  I like to get a feel for them and check out the action they have.  Then anytime is a good time.  The best time for me is when you know the fish are there, have a couple already caught and want to see what the lure will do.  It is a lot of experimenting and changing tactics.  Almost all lures will catch...just depends how they are used, when and if the fish want them that day.

As for colors, I will try new ones.  I think I like to try new patterns more than new colors though.  I won't spend tons on the "custom" plug colors though.  I don't think the fish care if the plug is hand airbrushed or not.  I think those lures are to catch the fishermen ;D.  Nice lures, they swim and work well, but are very flashy and expensive in my book.  I can do it with a cheaper version.

Just remember, ALL lures are made to catch fishermen. SOME lures will consistantly catch fish.

There are only so many designs/colors out there, all else is a variation of these.

Given time you will find what lure works best for you in a particular situation and pretty much go to that lure MOST of the time.

There is no need to overload your tackle box with dozens of similar lures.

NOTE: this in no way says that I will not try new lures.  ;D

Good Topic Rick.
I have always used my tried and true lures and replace them as needed before I go to something new. However,I will buy the new stuff, after kicking it around with others; especially if I think I can make it work after a tune up or adjustment.

When I owned my tackle shop some lures would sell over and over. When a new lure came out by a known manufacture it would sell for awhile and then die out until the word got out it caught fish. Other lures that cam out by a start up company’s would catch fisherman. My shop was on the water, so during slow times I would walk out on the dock and throw a new start up’s lure just to see.  The one thing I found out was when a customer walked up to the shop and I walk in with rod in hand and that lure on the line, that lure would sell. One day I left the rod leaning on the counter with a lure that never sold and I sold out of the lure in one day without saying a word.  I think you have to try new things and also try things that guys catch fish from other parts of the country. You never know if you don’t try, if a lure that is used to catch Salmon in Lake Ontario will also catch Stripers. It does !

Very interesting!

It's very true too...if someone says a lure catches, even only 1 fish, everyone will want to try it.  For instance, when a B&T Shop says this lure caught fish at this location, everyone goes out, buys the lure and goes fishing at that spot.  I know that I look to the local B&T Shops to point me in the right direction.  They know what works better or best in the area they service.

I was often asked where people were catching fish. I would tell customers what I have heard. But not one person ever came back and said the lure or the spot did not work. That’s fishing and some days just getting out is good.
