Hotrod Jr here seeking knowledge on surf fishing. I've planned a surf fishing trip for Saturday 11-21-09, weather permitting of course. I'm planning on going down to the end of IBSP to fish off the jetty hoping for some tog, and stripers/blues in the ocean. Thanks to everyone from this post http://njsaltwaterfisherman.com/forums/index.php?topic=14422.0 I now know how to fish for tog, tie some crazy loop swoop tuck around the finger through the hole back around the finger knots (thanks Bucktail and Capt Joe  ) What I'd like to know is the best spot for tog, and if I should even bother for tog. I was told to go for tog, and told not to bother. I was also told about a small wreck on the ocean side of the jetty, and along the rocks on the bay side is killer for tog.

So basically what I'm asking is yes or no for tog. I know stripers/blues have been hitting on Ava's/metals. I'll have more then enough poles for anything, I'll just stop at hotrods house and hijack some of his poles, shh don't tell him!!

I don't know about right now, but about a month  ago guys were bailing them pretty much anywhere on the rocks.  However, the hot spot was the rock jetty on the bayside behind the Lighthouse.  You have to jump down onto the rocks and walk out there.  Cast out towards the south(away from the Lighthouse).  Green crabs were bait of choice, clams were working too.  Also lots of guys gathering up little crabs on the inside of the rock jetty under rocks and the cloth they put down around the rocks in the tidal pools.  The only thing about Tog is they may start to move out to those deeper waters, when...hopefully someone else will be able to help you with that.

As for stripers and blues...they will be in there too.  I would stick with the main Inlet Jetty.  Mullet or bunker work well this time of year.  Don't forget your lures...AVA's and metal.

Weather is always the key with the fishing.Who knows ? You really can't do everything. Surf conditions are important. Is the water clean or dirty?Rough etc...Tog should be there but not in the same numbers as a few weeks ago.They're moving to deeper water. Stripers and blues are everyone's main target now. Clams, bunker or lures. Especially metal/teaser during the day and plugs in the dark.Needlefish and black swimmers were working before the storm. Don't try everything at once. watch for posted reports and put together a plan for you. Good fishing

The simple answer...I have not seen any Tog caught so far at the N. jetty.  Maybe that is because everyone is targeting stripers.

I am down there a few times a week and know a ton of guys from the B&T that I talk to on a regular basis.  I have watched a few fishing the jetty and nothing as far as tog goes.

With this blow that just went through call before you go out there.  The beaches took a hard hit and I am sure the park will be closed during high tide for a while.

As far as bait, use what you can get.  A lot of the bait boats have not been out for a while because of the storm.

I have plans for Sat or I would have met up with you out there.  If they change I will let you know.

The best thing to do, IMO. When you hi-jack the poles, hi-jack the Parker also. Take the Parker to a wreck on one of the reefs near Barnegat Inlet and anchor up.

You may even get HotRod himself to go out with you. Show him how to catch em up Jeff.

I'll be able to hijack his boat once i get a license, and learn how to dock it without breaking something 

And I called the park house, and he said not much of the beach is open, but down by the inlet is open as of now. The park closes during high tide tho, but he said that will probably change, since the seas will calm down around wednesday.

Going to get Ava's soon, and was thinking about trying those Gulp sand eels, with that nice hook thingy with the spring thingy and the weight thingy that Mr Bucktail had

There were a few tog from what I heard  in the canal before the storm but not nearly like it was. So it is possible that they're at the Barnegat Inlet rocks . Most of the surf guys have switched to stripers over the last two weeks or so because the action has been good !!!!

I think it will all depend on the birds. If I don't see much bird action, I'll go try for tog off the rocks. I'm going with about 4 people, so we can switch it up a little. Ahhh the excitement!!!

Take some clams.  Sometimes the stripers are looking for sandeel imitations and sometimes they swim right by are look for clams.

Got to the park house at 5am on Saturday. After getting the 3 day permit, driving down to the end, de-flating the tires a little bit, we finally arrived on the beach at 5:35 or so. Wasn't very many others around, but after setting up our "camp", eating my muffin (yumm), and tying rigs up in the dark, the sun finally started to break the horizon. Once the sun was up 1/2 way over the horizon, I took a quick look around to see if there was any bird action. I saw that there were quite a few birds east of barnegat lighthouse, and they were slowly making their way to us! I thought it would be perfect. High tide was coming in, and maybe it would push the baitfish closer to shore, but the birds were just out of reach for many fisherman on the surf. That doesn't say the same for fisherman fishing off the jetty though. Seems to me the sweet spot for stripers is about 3/4 the way down the jetty, on the ocean side, and tog sweet spot is from 3/4 way to all the way down the jetty on the inlet side. 6 keeper tog were put in the box, and 3 keeper stripers from various fisherman.

I was told about a few "holes" if i walk west down the inlet rocks, but my lack of experience proved that I couldn't find them. I did however find out that I should catch my own green crab instead of buying them. Evidently the tog are looking for the crab that are on the rocks, and not some foreign crab that may or may not make them think twice.

After talking to numerous fisherman along the shore, and not doing much fishing myself, I found out tons of useful information, that may help me on my next trip.

Stripers/Blues
Lures - Ava's with red/green tails

Bait - Mullet on a high-lo/fishfinder rig

It sounds like you had a great day out there.  I hope you make it down here more often.

The spot you are talking about is a great one and I always have good luck there.  It is usually my starting location and from there i work my way north and pick the holes and rips.  But after this last blow I am going to have to make a trip out there to see what new holes opened up and where the new cuts are located.

I will be going out (if the weather holds) on Friday morning.  I still like to throw clams into the mix as well as thr bait you mentioned.

Do you have the surf bug yet? 

Maybe we can get your dad out and show him some real fishing, lol.

This time of year is great, cold but great.  This part of the year is great for anyone just starting out as the fish are here in droves and catching is a more likely thing to happen as the skunks are fewer and farther in between.

When you say surf bug, what do you mean exactly? The little cart on big ole' wheels? I tried throwing clams off the rocks towards the lighthouse, but I'm guessing I got eaten by crabs. Lots of blue claw remnants on the shore/rocks. I wanted to walk north, but there were a lot of trucks just a tad bit north of where I was. I may wait till the new year, and grab the year pass for my truck, cause I can't see paying 50$ on top of everything else whenever I'd like to go fishing. I've been trying to get my dad out on the surf. Maybe he will come next time when I have my truck all set up. Currently I'm working on making a custom rod rack for the front of my truck. I'm just not sure on how to mount the PVC to the aluminum frame, and mounting the aluminum frame to my truck.  I have enough materials to wrap my whole truck in rod holders 

Any ideas? Money is tight, or else I'd go buy one, and I'd rather have a good surf pole for Christmas HINT HINT HINT

Yeah, I'd say you have the bug.  Wait till you get everything set up it's just like walking out your house and onto the sand.  Everything is in automatic mode and it is so ewasy to get around out there.

I would suggest you frequent either Grumpy's or Betty & Nicks to get to know some of the locals.  Once they see you put there a few times and they feel comfortable with your actions your in.  They will show you tricks you could not of imagined.

Let me know the next time you go out and I can meet you at Grumpys and introduce you to some of the guys there.  Especially Paul over there.  He is a wealth of knowledge when it comes to fishing those beaches.

Good luck on your project.  I would just look and see how other PVC units are put together and just copy them.  One thing though do not ride a long distance with your rods in the holders they will get beat up.  Transport them inside and then switch over to the racks once you get there.

I actually don't have the bug. I've seen it, I want it, but I don't have it. 

This weekend is a no-go for me. It's the girlfriends birthday, but next weekend might be possible. I doubt I'll drive on the beach, but I can always park and bring my sons lil' red wagon.
