I have the Penn 525 MAG.  It is one of the best casting reels I have owned.  It casts a mile.  You do have to get used to the Mag settings but when you do it flies forever.

I have it on a Tica 11' rod M/H .  Great combo.

The reel will set you back about $150.00.  Not to bad for a really great piece of equipment.

i second the 525 mag,   also if you can get your hands on a daiwa SL30SH,  they are tanks.  just add or remove the brakes as you get more comfortable with it.

oh yeah,  be sure to use shock leader, especially when casting heavy lead.  nothing like breaking off 8oz and it going straight up.  can you say DUCK AND COVER!!!!! cfzd

That really is a nice reel. I might have to invest in that.

I think any rod/reel setup beats my surf poles. Heck, I can throw my dads 8' baitcaster further then my 11' surf rod!

Mag 525  is  the talk of the surf but it has been a slow seller for us @ JHO  we have one left if anyone wants it will spool it up for free  with your desired line that we have in stock

I use the Shimano Calcutta 700 with the level wind on a Tica 11'. Throws 8 oz. with a bunker head with ease and more if required. Some prefer without the levelwind. I know many who have Ambassador 7000 with levelwind. For night fishing I generally use spinning and have a Shimano baitrunner ( the big one )and a Penn 850SS. My fishing partner uses the big Van Staal's (250 I think). These  are beasts and can throw 12oz. plus bunker head or more on the right rod. Budget definely comes into play here. I think the 525 Penn makes a fine choice and will do the job nicely @ approximately $150 it's a great value. Have fun  ;D
