Check gas for contanimination

  This is something I do each spring before start up. I disconnect the gas line at the engine, pump some into a clear jar to check for water, dirt etc. At least I know I am starting the season with clean gas.

Makes sense. But should the gas be pumped out before winterizing? When I summerize my snowblower, and winterize my yard equipment, I make sure to siphon the gas out, and then run it till it stalls.

However, boat engines are probably much, much different in this case.

Empty Tanks Create Condensation.  that's what I was told.

This is true, but there still will be an air gap between the top of the fuel, and the top of the tank. Condensation there?

 Many views if you should empty tank in the fall or fill it. Some say with the ethanol you should empty it. I don't so I pump some out just to make sure no water build up over the winter.

i was always told to add sta-bil and fill the tank. which way is better? empty or full?

 I put the additives in also. I just like the extra
security of knowing that there is no water in the tank. Pull some out and you know for sure.

Great tip. For most of us mechanically inclined, we can do it. It is a great practice that should be included in Spring Commissioning . Get water in a fuel injector rail and its big $$$$$.
Last winter I left about 7 gallons in my Maritime's plastic tank, first winter that I did not top off to 90%.By July when I finally got my boat ready to go in, it was 7 gals of water.

Using oil in a 4 stroke system won't harm it?

I understand you'd kill the engine with the choke, and you'd leave a little oil behind in the carb, but also you'd leave oil in all the fuel lines and stuff. Would that be ok for when you start it up again in the spring?

Would the oil leak into the bowl and sit there? I know the bowl holds a decent amount of fuel. Not sure if the oil would be a problem in the bowl though.
