Bilge pump !!

Well I checked the bilge pump so Einstien me filled back of boat  area with water above bilge with battery off... Nope didnt pump.. Battery ON still no pump.. Flick the switch it worked which i knew but nothing wired direct on float!! Thank god i checked!!
  Now its a mayfair with float on it but  i traced the wires from the float and they wired the float up wrong only works manual... Going to try and do this Sat or Fri nite But anyone close to Morgan area who knows how to do this if i have a question I can call???

 dont know how to do it, but just make sure its not wired through your battery kill switch. mine will operate directly from the batts, no matter which position my main kill switch is in.

Good thing you checked ...

It is basically 2 wires.

I run a wire from the positive side of the battery to one side on an in-line fuse. I run the othe side of the inline fuse to the pump. There will already be a wire to the pump from the switch. Just take that new positive wire and connect it all together. You now have what is called a "wired OR." That means the switch will turn it on manually when you put it in the "ON" position OR the float will activate it when the water is more than 2" I believe. I just rewired everything from my incident yesterday so give me a call at 732-859-1212.

Where are you located? If you are close and I can;t explain it on the phone, MAYBE I can meet up with you. I still am doing some reconfiguration to my pump system. I now have 2 float switches wired in and 3 pumps, as well as a high water alarm.

This is not difficult ... if you are not used to screwing into your hull, it can be a bit dramatic to mount the float. It sounds like you had one already so the holes so be there.

Im in Morgan Think I may have to install an inline fuse. all the wires are there I was just going to take the  float wires and hook the one to the hot right to the battery. Some of the float wires are hooked up I touched the hot wire to the battery and it kicked on didnt matter if float was activated
   I think they just wired it up all wrong. Thank god I checked it its always dry ( knock on wood) but to be safe!!.
 What boat you got Ed ALOT of pumps lol...

off F/S/S nice days off use to be electrician before i bacame a cop but never messed with boats so im  cautious.. Ill try this weekend alone sat only day i can if not than we shoot for next weekend maybe

Next friday I plan on running battery cables and installing fuseblock in helm, installing my AM/FM and doing fuel filter.

Next Friday is def a work day boatwise for me if that works for anyone.

In the Manasquan River just west of the Pt. Pleasant Canal entrance. I believe it may also be called Osborne Island (or something like that). It is a place folks beach there boats on weekends and picnic.

Hi Salty,

Below are 2 (poor) hand drawings. You should be able to knock the float swtich install out quickly. You probably need an inline fuse holder and proper fuse; a yellow ring connector; two wire nuts and some wire ties.

The first drawing (Fig 1) shows what most people do. This is danagerous in that you have to manually turn on the switch to turn on the pump. What if the boat is in the slip and it takes on water and you are not there?

Fig 2 shows the addition of a float switch. The float switch tells the pump to turn on if there is 2" of water in the bilge and turns off with about 5/8" of water in the bilge. one can still manually turn on the pump, but the float switch, if working, will insure the pump can work unattended.

BTW, Rule makes the best pumps and switches. There is no close second.

So, the truth table shows that when the float is closed (less than 2" of water in the bilge) and the toggle switch is off, the pump is off. that makes sense.

The next case is if the toggle is on and the float is off (less than 2" of water in the bilge), the pump will turn on. You can use this as a test.

The next case is if the toggle is off but the float is on (more than 2" of water in the bilge) the pump turns on until it pumps the water down. You can test by raising the toggle with no water in the bilge.

The last case is when the toggle is on and the float is on (more than 2" of water in the bilge) then the pump is on.

This takes care of all emergencies in my opinion.

There are other schemes and ways to configure pumps, this is the bare minimum to make sure you are safe.

Please note that basically you are taking one wire of the float switch and hooking it to the battery through a fuse (the pump will tell you what max. fuse to use) and then taking the other wire of the float and connecting it to the toggle wire and power (+) wire of the pump. That easy.
