Battery connections, Cables, Etc.
« on: April 10, 2010, 12:49:00 AM »
Listen, I was taught real well when working at the dealers.
Before any connections go on a battery, I take a small wire brush and clean the base around the stud where the cables lay on top of til its bright and shiny.
Next, I take a piece of 80 grit or coarser sand paper and hit the top and bottom of the battery cable ring terminals til there bright and shiny,
but before they go on, I put on an external tooth stainless lockwasher, first.
Why, cause it makes one heck of a bite between the battery and the first cable.
Then the cables go on with the main engine cables first and any others on top.
Then it gets stainless  nylock nuts for the sandwitch with a coat of Corrosion X on top.
Works every time, never loosens up, the Corrosion X keeps'em corrosion free all season.

Great post Matt. I ALMOST did that with my installation this year. When I installed my batteries this year I simply looked at the cables and declared them clean. WRONG!!!

As you probably saw in a recent post of mine, I had a poor connection which did not allow enough juice to the motor to even lift it when I hit the tilt/trim button. After removing the cables and cleaning them my problem was corrected.  t^

If anyone thinks Matt's way is wrong, I can verify that you may have trouble leaving out any steps he posted.   rgmn rgmn rgmn

Glad I can pass on these good tips. 99% of electrical problems on boats are bad grounds. I follow this procedure every time I re-connect cables.
