Fresh water Bait preference

As i got back into saltwater fishing last year, this yeah my new years resoultion was to start fresh water fish considering my father in law loves it.

What is the preference with everyone as far as bait for things like trout, small and large mouth bass.  Both live bait and artifical.
I know bass will bit what i use for salt water, well the small plugs and lures at least.  But what does trout like.  thanks for any help and just keeping a newbie like myself learning.

It really depends where you are fishing and what live bait lives in the water.  The old worm under a bobber always works well.  Trout also like those trout bites and even live bait.  For lures, black and red spinners or any inline spinner works well.  Bass will usually always take a shiner or killie.  As for artificial, I use plastic worms, jig n pigs, jerk baits, spinning baits, chatter baits deeper water I throw crankbaits and topwater I use frogs in the right places, spooks, poppers, etc...

It really depends on the body of water, the bait that lives in the lake, water clarity and temperature, depth of the water, time of the year, etc...to chose the right lure and right color.  Black, white, blue, red, chartreuse, firetiger, sexy shad are all good go to colors and cover the wider spectrum of water clarity.

ok, Ill get more specific:
Trout, over the next two months in streams in ocean/monmoyuth county.  Possible Alliare park stream and the streams running off from there.  During the day, from 9-4.  Possible bass in the river as well.

For bass, in the manasquan resivior over the next few months from 9-4.

If you are looking to do some freshwater fishing this fall, the state will be stocking trout (some big ones) come around October 1st. The Manasquan River will receive it's fair share of trout. A worm rigged with the smallest (size 12 to 16) hook you can find, with just enough split shot to have it bounce off the bottom and drift naturally, will do the trick, find the holes and find the fish. My favorite all time bass lure is a plastic worm rigged Texas style.

I like to fish the worm  with out a weight if I can get away with it. You can throw it in to the heaviest of cover with out much hangups. Fish the weeds, shallow or deep, thats where the bass are.  My second favorie lure is the spinner bait, also fairly weedless and you can fish it top to bottom. Good luck!

for small trout streams, the only thing i use are the smallest panther martin spinners with a plain silver or gold body, silver or gold blade, but with some hackle skirt on it. i'm never had many hits on the skirtless ones. A rebel hellgrammite is real good in a rocky river retrived slowly just ticking the bottom. Also if your into fly fishing, or get a hold of a fly bobber, terrestial patterns do real well this time of year, hoppers fished close to a grassy undercut bank will draw in a big rainbow, or late evening brown. I do 90% of my trout fishing in western mass though, central jersey is kind of sparse for good trout spots, so you get swampped with crowds. goodluck
