Finding structure
« on: May 31, 2010, 05:09:48 PM »
Ok, so I've got my GPS dialed in on wreck or rock pile but, having a hard time separating normal bottom from the structure. I come in easy over mark and then circle it watching finder. I just can't seem to tell if what I'm looking at is the mark I want. Can someone lend a helping hint or two to make it go a little easier? Thanks!

Two things i look for...

1- Often, the bottom will simply rise (appear shallower) than the surrounding area. This is because the waves from the transduced cant penetrate the structure and it "thinks" its the bottom.

2- Some times, the strip of color on the ff screen that represents the bottom will widen.  This can sometimes signify a less solid bottom (loose mud vs rock, for instance) but the porous nature of some wrecks can do this too.

basically, just look for any irregularity- anything that looks "different" on the ff screen.  you might have to drive around a bit to find it, even if the gps #'s seem to be right. Once you do find it though, hit the MOB button to mark it for later!

it nice to know basically where something is.  A good map will help.  Get on a reef site, drive slow, watch the finder and you will see a difference in bottom.  If the water is consistently a certain dept, like 50', then it suddenly raised to 30', you are probably over a big structure.
