After a couple of postponements over the weekend due to some of NOAA's great weather reporting (we pay these guys for this?
?) had the Rich Daretany party out today of a stab at the flatties. Although the late night weather report called for NW @ 10 kts, it was honking at 17 kts gusting to 22 kts. Once again, great forecasting guys.
Decided to hunker down for a few hours doing some river fishing in the Navesink. Glad we did as the wind was manageable and we caught some really nice fish. Not real big, but nice fat legal keepers to start the day off on the right foot. Around 11:00 am decided to try to head out to the Leonardo flats and was welcomed to a NW wind that was good for fishing using the Earle pier as a wind block. Too bad the fishing was REAL slow. This time last year we were whacking some nice fish, but the Sandy Hook/Raritan Bay area has been pretty slow as of late. Recorded a water temp. of 72.3 degrees around Earle, which might have something to do with the lack of fish.
The water has warmed up very rapidly for this early in the season, so I would assume some fish might be landing in deeper water or outside in 35-45 feet depths. Going to try outside later this week for a look see. Tomorrow is always another day. By the way, the Daretany group was a great bunch of guys who really know how to fish........great job guys. Wait till August at the Ambrose!!!!
Tight Lines,
Capt. John
