Had a charter with Ken Zwirko today from his temp slip in Belmar. Left the dock at 4 AM to a bright crescent moon in search of bunker. That took a bit longer than normal, thanks to the bunker fleet and spotter planes that continue to roam the area in front of the SR inlet looking to sweep any bunker that lives.
Getting these boats out of our inshore waters can't happen soon enough for me. Why does it take a rape of a resource before our politicians and state/federal bureaucrats get off of there asses to do something about it. Don't they realize how important the Menhaden is to the ecosystem and the fisheries?
Back to the striper trip. Hard bites were few; quite a few runoffs and lots of window shoppers who would harass the live bunker. Had chances to nail a few fish, but missed.
By the end of the trip, my brother boated a 34 and 33 lb bass to make the day. The last one followed the bait to the boat and slammed it about 10 yards in front of the engines...that sight keeps you coming back!
