6/23/10 Fishing with IrishAyes
« on: June 24, 2010, 08:19:24 AM »
Ate and had a few beers at Sunsets on SRI with my GF just before meeting up with Capt Joe and NakedEd at the Marina just across the way.

Got the dock just after 1 o clock and headed out in search of bunker....Headed North out of the Inlet and saw some getting air around I believe Asbury Park... Picked about 8-10 on that school ... made some more pickings along the way, endeed with around a dozen and a half pieces of bait.

Off to look for the stripers it was, headed to one of Joes spots, had a runoff on Joes pole, then waited , brought the line in and half the bunker was gone (bluuuuuefish) Didnt wait very long until Joe's rod again ZZzzzzZZzZzZZZzZzzz, hands it to my GF and the fight is on. Shes reeling and reeling and getting tired and reeling and stopping and reeling and gets it near the boat, and Ed and Joe make the scoop with the net. 34# for her first striper and new PB!!!! Boy was that awesomeme, I think I was more happy than she was. Now during the time where she was reeling in that fish, I hear zzzZZZZZZzZzzzzzzZZZz and I look and its my rod, bouncin - screamin - dancin you name it. Few minutes of fighting that just after hers is landed, I landed one almost 35#, my PB as well!

Hung around a little more, we all picked up a few short fluke there as well while waitin for the stripers.

Made a few more drifts, nada --- 3 foot sandshark Jaimee caught, and some skates. Last drift we had our lines out, and me and Ed hear this huge slap on top of the water maybe 50 feet from the boat, and Ed says "was that you", I said "No I thought you took a cast or something".... were all looking up and we saw Joes bait getting slapped around on top, then this monstrosity of a tail whipping all over the place going after this bunker for a good 2 minutes(I'm sure you guys can guess what it is by now), Joe decides to give the bunker a little movement on his own and as soon as he does that, I think it alters the mind on that THRESHERRRRRRR and it links right onto that bunker and Joe is hooked up!!!!!!...... for about 30 seconds until the tail decides to give it a whip right on the line and snaps all.... but was that an awesome sight and an exciting few minutes that the GF and I never experienced.

Ended the day around 7:45 got back to the dock just before dark, took some measurements on the fish (I told my GF she gets her FIRST striper I will get it mounted for her). I was hoping itd be 28 1/2 inches so it wouldnt burn a whole in my wallet... BUT it was not to be, and I'm even more happy that it was as big as it was. Near 11 inch tail, about 45 inch length and a 24 inch girth.

What a great trip made from Joe again. The GF and I had a great time, and it was nice to meet Ed! Hope to see him out there with Joe fluke fishing in the future! I'll bring some pastries from the bakery next time!

Wow Mark, great report. I feel like I was there in on the action.  ;D

It was good having you and Jaimee on the boat today. Fun trip and I am glad Jaimee got her first bass, and a monstrous one at that, aboard the Irish Ayes.

That thresher was a sight to see. I was hoping it would come flying out of the water to give a good show but it wasn't meant to be. One swip of it's massive tail and gone.........
