Replacing Mono Line with Braided
« on: July 05, 2010, 03:03:14 AM »
Hello all. Sorry to be a pain. I would like to switch my son's reel over to 30 lb braided test. He has mono fil on it now. My question is, can I tie the braided line to the line that is on now near the spool or do I have to take all the mono fil line off completely? Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

you can join the braid to the mono as you mentioned...i prefer a uni to uni knot for this....or you can spool the braid directly to the reel...just cover the inside of the spool with a wrap or 2 of electrical tape before putting the braid on to prevent slippage.

Like Capt. Carl said just tie the 2 together but I would not use the tape as it could give you a mess later on when you re-spool.  Just use a uni to uni knot and make sure that there is enough mono to cover the spool.  Why this is done is because the braid is very slippery and it will turn on the spool eventually.

The reason I don't like the tape is because if the line gets wet to the spool it will cause the tape's glue to get messed up and you will have to clean the glue off the spool.  Just a hint.

Good Luck

Yes you CAN join the mono to braid we do it all the time with a Albright Knot or the Uni to Uni.
Take off what you feel it is proper amount of mono and add your braid. Remember to keep the braid spooled tight. You'll be fine.
Good Luck

The line capacity of the reel comes into play here. In some cases I use 300yd spools of braid or more and getting the right amount of backing can be tricky. You can get it exact with 2 reels exactly the same and putting the braid on first then the backing and then reversing. That way you the reel filled just right.  ;D

I only back it with maybe 20 yards of mono before I spool the braid.
Fish out of Toms River NJ.
