You cn not catch peanut bunker on a sabiki. They can only be snagged or net.

They do not go after hooks like snappers, pilchards, etc.
That being said, any small sabiki size will work.
I like to chum with catfood to draw the snappers in (when fishing from dock or back of boat) then just work the sabiki in the chum line.

I also use popers and small kastmasters for my snappers too.

I wil try castnetting them this year also.

Cast net all the way for peanutes, but they can be snagged too.

Any bait store in the shore area will have sabikis to use for snappers.

The ones I usually get have white hair and some silver flash to them (the flash is the key).

Spearing on a hook also works weel for snappers but NOTHING beats fresh piece of snapper on a hook to catch other snappers.

Hi njadam,

I try to net as much bait as possible. In my marina and in shallow water, I net mullet, peanuts, menhaden, shad, killies and grass shrimp. As the water deepens (greater than 15-20 ft.) the cast net is essentially useless as it will not sink fast enough and the fish can swim away from it. In these cases, I use sabikis to catch hickory shad, herring, snappers and pilchards.

I use grub jigs with white tails or glo as well. White was so popular that one day fishing with my Dad, we ran out of white (the white mylar was ripped off) and we were not catching. We then cut up small strips of a white rag and put them on the grub jig and caught great.

There are many variables besides color including hook size and size of the leaders. It matters!

I have successfully used the Daiichi "Bleeding Hook" rigs with glo tubes the past few years..

Good luck,

Capt. Ed

Depends.  Right now the snappers are quite small and you want to use the smallest size sabiki you can.  When the snappers get bigger, the small sabiki will still work, but it's suck light #test line the bite through the leadered hooks effortlessly.

Chumming does help, as mentioned.  I like the sabiki rig for snappers when I want them for bait as it's easy to use, quick, yet still fun.

Sportsman Center on Rte 130 has them, basspro, basically all bait-n-tackle places should have them.
I go with the plain ones.  The fancier ones with flash or glow-in-the-dark material are good too.
