Jigging and Trolling on the Irish Ayes 10/20/10
« on: October 20, 2010, 07:35:28 PM »
Managed to get a day off today and got up to Shark River to fish with Captain Joe, Bob G. and Pete.  The plan was to look for stripers and try to jig them up.

After clearing the inlet, we headed south in search of life.  Within a short time Bill from the Cock Robin called with some solid intel, and we were off!  Thanks Bill. :P ;D t^

Our first stop produced some gator sized blues which were happy to take our jigs.  The rest of the morning we repeated the same scenario over and over:

1.  Find the birds
2.  Motor over to them
3.  Drop the jigs
4.  Catch some big blues
5.  Get cut off by another boat
6.  Watch the school disappear
7.  Look for more birds
8.  Go back to step #1

It got pretty frustrating as there were many clueless boaters out today, which required us to move often.

Stripers were scarce for us today.  Although I managed to jig one up that was just shy of the 28" mark.

Later in the afternoon, as the schools thinned and Joe's blood pressure went up, we decided to go on the troll.  We caught a few more blues and our only keeper striper while trolling.  Pete managed to wrestle a nice 34" keeper to the boat.  Joe has the pic on his cell phone and should post it later.

All in all, it was a great day of catching, with terrific crew and some beautiful weather.  Definitely a fun day out today.  Thanks Joe. t^

BTW, for those of you who are interested, if you go to the 7:00 minute mark on the You Tube clip below, you can see a clip of Joe singing the song that he was singing on the boat today! ;D

Man, what ever happened to a peaceful day on the water.  nosmly

Had guys just pull up and stop RIGHT WHERE WE WERE CASTING!!! This happened way too many times. I know some people just don't have a clue but today was ridiculous. Did have one guy make an error in judgement and he acknowledge his mistake and apologized. Have to respect a person like that. The others... smk

It was a decent day of catching though. Had blue fish all over creation. Thanks Bill for the heads up.  t^

The bass were scarce today but Bucktail Bob did his magic and jigged one up. Was an inch short of a keeper but a bass still the same.  ;D

Pete cranked a 34"er in that hit an umbrella rig armed with Chartreuse shads. That striper will soon be on his dinner plate.

After I got home I found the day continueing where it left off on the water. Went to upload Pete's pic with his striper and it seems that I took a video and not a pic. Anyone know how to pull one frame off of a video taken from an IPhone?

I just might take a ride out again tomorrow. Depends on how long it takes for my blood pressure to return to somewhere near normal. Oh, and did I tell you...I HATE PEOPLE!!! (right Bob)  thud

Nice report Guys,  As for boating etiquette, You would not like a Bass blitz at all over by the Breezy point jetty. nts nts  Its like the scene from the movie Jaws with the guys with the dynamite.  I like to keep this waterballoon launching kit on the boat for when the idiots go speeding through a blitz and chase the fish away.  ;D

Bob, Joe, great report, just wish it was filled with more bass and less morons. I have to admit, sometimes I almost reach a breaking point with some of the jerks out on the water myself. <'((((><
I've spent most of my life fishing, the rest I've just wasted     <'((((><
