Dead sticking for fluke with live bait(snappers,spots,peanut bunker,killies,mullet) can be deadly. Especially in the rivers and bays from docks bulkheads etc... With large numbers of juvenile fluke inside it is boring. My favorite way is to bucktail/jig. You're holding the rod and feel every bite and are more involved in fishing. Every technique works ,you decide what you like.

You will cover more ground, thus bringing the bait to the fluke rather than waiting for them to find it.  Although fluke will hunt, they are primarily ambush feeders that wait, hidden on the bottom, for a baitfish to swim by.

In the surf, make sure you fish the bait or lure right up onto the sand, as fluke often hold in that first cut tight to the beach.

The biggest reason I would tell you not to deadstick for fluke is if you were fishing a very rocky area (Shrewsbury, Snake, etc). Deadsticking in rocks would be a death knell on your rigs.

Deadsticking will produce fish. You may not have as much a catch as someone tending their pole, but you can have a decent day of it.

Any bait will work while deadsticking. Most notably a strip baits.

I like live mullet for deadsticking from shore.Hook them behind the dorsil fin close to the tail.Fish a bait runner reel and leave it open so that the fish can take line.Have taken lots of nice fluke in this manner. Bad news, fluke won't be back till next year.

I will dead stick a pole over familiar sandy bottom if Im fishing off the boat alone. I use a squid and Killie or Squid and spearing combo on a 3' leader attached to a sinker and snap swivel. This is called dragging bait.Then I will hold on to my other rod with a bucktail jig with a teaser hooked attached 2' to 3' above and twitch it every few seconds. Sometimes the deadstick rod produces as much as the rod Im holding.

Fluke fishing is a funny thing. Things will work one day and not work the next.

I'll almost always dead stick one rod and sometimes it goes off more than the one I'm holding. Other days, not so much.

Just experiment and let the fish tell you what they want on a given day.

Surf is a different animal. From the boat, you will get movement from the boat, thus, deadsticking will work. From the surf, you have to make the bait move so it crosses the path of a fluke lying in wait for his meal.

In august, catch small blues (under 6 inches) and through them back in with a bait rig w/fish finder.

The problem, the fluke get gut hooked a lot.

Much more fun walking the beach.

I'm with you! I love walking the beach in the summer,especially early AM. I usually throw bucktails/gulp with a gulp teaser. In fact can't come soon enough for me, Come on spring

No worries, do you have a picture of your rig set up for walking for fluke?

I love doing this, when it's hot, I can pull a dozen fluke between two jetti's Most are small though. But fun.

Sorry, I was away for awhile. A hi/lo rig with top hook about 3' up and a 1-2oz sinker is all you need. Dropper loops for the hooks about 4-6". The swimming mullets 4" is what I use in white/chartruse/pink. You can use a bucktail instead of a sinker , then I use only 1 high hook. Hope this helps
