Help Painting a Old Fiber Glass Rod
« on: December 21, 2010, 11:52:17 AM »
Hi All,

I was going through my old stuff and found the first fishing rod my pop pop let me use on his boat 25 years ago. It's an old fiber glass rod but it still has good action and I'd like to clean it up and either use it myself or pass it on to one of my kids. It's a ugly brown color so I'd like to strip it and paint it black. Has anyone ever painted a fiber glass blank and got it to turn out good. I would prefer spray paint as I don't have access to any fancy painting equipment. Any tips would be appreciated.

Regards,

Chris

Chris,

I would suggest either leaving the rod blank the color it is or paint it black.  When you have everything off(guides, thread and if there is a decal) of the rod try wiping the rod down with acetone.  The rod might clean up nicely without doing much more work.  If you want to paint the rod blank you still have to wipe the rod down with acetone to remove all the dirt and oil.  I would suggest buying a good can of spray paint from your local hardware store.  Once the rod is painted and dry then epoxy the rod and that will help keep the rod looking good.  If you have any further question feel free to contact me 732-604-2365.

Hello,

Thanks for the info the rod is in decent shape I may just do the acetone wipe and go from there. I don't like the brown color but I don't want to wreck the rod either.

Thanks again

Chris

Krylon Fusion- Have done several old solid F/G boat poles with real good results. Large color selection, finished with clear rattle can poly.
