Bluefish Rigs
« on: January 12, 2011, 09:06:24 AM »
Hi All,

With the winter blues me and the kids are planning next seasons trips and we are thinking of a day trip out Bluefishing (I don't think my kids are old enough for a night bluefishing crowd unless they have changed from 15 years ago when I made my last night trip and got puked on....)So I can get out of the house and do some shopping and rig making (sanity check)what does a bluefishing rig look like? I vaugely remeber using egg sinkers years ago, I don't have any of those but I do have fish finder sleeves which if it will work I'd rather use with the bank sinkers I already have and use for bottom fishing instead of buying egg sinkers which I would only use once in a while. Anyway any help would be appreciated. Also I might as well ask does anyone know when the bluefishing starts in the Point Pleasant area I am planning on going on the Cock Robin since they sponsor this sight  before Fluke season starts.

Regards,

Chris

By the sounds of it you will be using chunks for bait. All you need is a hook with wire leader. For a sinker, used with simply enough weight to keep the bait in the chum/chunk slick collumn, you can use a pinch on sinker or rubber core sinker of the appropriate weight.

bank sinker with a sleeve fish finder is two much hardware and may spin and twist line. Go with what irishayes says.  I like egg sinkers when I need to go real heavy 3-4 ounce+ or I need to get to the fish that are hugging the bottom

whs  A couple of egg or bank sinkers may be useful if they are holding right on the bottom.  You may want to bring along a few diamond jigs as well.

Good luck! t^

Another thought.  Save your money on making and buying rigs.  The mates on the Cock Robin will set you up what rigs works best that day (at a minimal cost). After a few trip you will know what you need and then you can start building up your arsenal.

Thanks guys for all the ideas. I now can do a little shopping and get myself some Jigs, egg and clip on sinkers. Do the bluefish show up before Fluke season starts? (assuming Memorial for opening day fluke again...)

I am trying to make a plan up for this coming season I figure try Winter Flounder in the begining of April, Blues in May and Flatties and hopefully Sea Bass at some point for the summer.......

Thanks agiain for the help.

Chris

Sounds like a plan. And yes, the blue fish arrive before the flatties. Striped bass will also arrive before the flounder and just before the blues.  t^

Best of luck this coming season. Looking forward to your reports.
