Mack fishing from party boat

Recently read an article about Mack fishing from Fisherman magazine and thought the author was dead wrong on tackles and gear suggestions.

1.  Rod and reel:  

Don't use inshore fluke rods and reels.  They are not heavy enough to handle depth, sinker weight and dogs in a crowded party boat.

Need at least 20-40 lbs class.

2.  Sinkers:

You need 12-24 oz to work upto depths upto 160' on a drift.  Put away anything less than 12 oz.

On a recent mack trip on a NS Party boat, I have seen too many inadequate light tackles and equipments from many anglers. 

You really need heavier gears to avoid tangles and to be able to stay on the bottom.

agree that fishing too light, esp. on a head boat, is a common mistake.

do you smoke them puppies up, or catchem for bait,r what?
