When to surf fish?
« on: February 22, 2011, 06:23:27 PM »
I picked up surf fishing last summer and had a blast. I was wondering when the surf fishing "season" starts and where are sime places to try early in the year.

Welcome Aboard,

For an early season striper I would suggest stalking the shallows or sod banks of the bays. This is where you will find them first as they will be migrating into the rivers to lay their eggs. Plus the water warms up sooner in these areas than the ocean  ;)

The bays and backwaters are legally open as of March 1.
The ocean is always open legally.
By April we should start seeing some fish out front.

My log from last year shows first bass caught in the bay during the second week of March. First bass out front in the second week of April.  Mainly a bait game until the temps warm up a bit, usually mid April.  I think we may have an earlier spring this year

Fishing, with me, has always been an excuse to drink in the daytime.

Yeh definitly bayside until the water temps warm up.  And most likely a bait bite with bloodworms or good fresh clam
