1st keeper bass weighed in

saw a report that the first keeper bass was taken and weighed in at Lacey's Marine in Forked River
18.7lbs on a plug......could be a banner spring!

Believe that was Nick Natasi but not sure...looks Luke him. Eitherway, great job and good news.

That is a well over minimum sized, good eating sized fish.  Much better to keep the teen fish and release the over thirty pounders.

why would you think that? Is it because you think the cows are the only breeders? Or lay more eggs? Well, your right about the bigger bass laying more eggs however, let me educate here:

Prime breeding age for striped bass is when they are between 26 and 28 inches in length. Not the 36-40 inch range as is commonly thought. This is one of the big reasons that guys on the internet are pushing for under that slot limit. There may be more eggs but this is when the fecundity is already on the downturn.

At this age (26 to 28")the fish are more active, produce a higher amount of viable eggs than any other time and are a good match for the males that they are schooling with as there are more of them. This is the reason why our limits are set at what they are. To protect the fish when they are most likely to reproduce the largest amount of viable eggs.

Luckily that 18lb fish is well over 28" more like 34"-36".  As for the fecundity issue, From what I understand, the largest bass still produce more viable eggs, because they produce so many more to begin with.  Also when big bass have babies those babies are more likely to grow up to be big bass, due to their inherent genetics.  One of the problems with today's size limits is that they are decreasing the average size of some fish, by creating a competitive breeding advantage for smaller fish which in turn beget small fish.

This is a good debate TT.

Genetics? I'm not sure I can agree with that. Any bass given the opprotunity will grow to be a cow. Taking into account the study below. Do you agree or disagree with it. What would you propose the size and quanity limits be?

Depending in the size of the female, one female can lay from 14,000 (3 pounder)-3,000,000 eggs (10 pounder). A thirty-pound female is capable of producing as many as five million eggs.  While Older fish produce more eggs these eggs are less viable and fish of this size are less abundant in numbers. Therefore on average the age 4-7 striped bass provide more eggs to the spawn percentage wise but produce less eggs. The point of the matter is less fish make it to the super breeder age due to human and predatory influence. Therefore there are far fewer to make up the breeding population.

edit: also, anything you noticed about the fish in the pic? anyone?
