finding the fish question

How do you know striped bass and blues are there if there are no birds or surface action. Should i just drift with the tide to find where the tide is taking them?

The Answer has a lot to do with the area your fishing. North?.. Barnegat?  South?

A good depth finder/sonar will help, learning how to use one properly will help even more.

I like to pretend to be a fish and ask myself if the area in question has everything to make me happy

I'm just talking about finding striped bass any where, not just in a certain area of NJ waters.

Bass as in other fish are found around Structure, lumps, bums, channel edges, clam beds.

Depends on where you are fishing and what time of year. This will determine what the bass are feeding on, etc.

Best bet is to study your charts, read your fish finder as you are going, don't be afraid to ask locals. While noone will give you "the spot" they will help you on generalities and what the fish are feeding on.

Don't rely on birds, fil the boat with no birds in sight at all

Your depth finder and chart plotter are your best friends when it come to finding fish. They will tell you the areas where the fish MOST LIKELY ARE. As with any type of fishing, there are no guarantees.

As CaptBob said, find structure and you are half way home. I say half way because the fish will not always be on the particular structure where you are.

my .02, once you find a hole holdong fish besure to mark it on your chartplotter and any other "spots" you may come upon  t^ The MOB button was my best friend  ;D

The most knowledge can be obtained from fishing with guys that have been doing it for a long time. Either go on a charter boat with a top notch and well known fisherman and consider it a day of schooling. Many qualified anglers on this sight are very willing to help you too. Stick around and view older posts because they contain a large amount of info. Some helpfull books and magazine articles have been written by local guys too.
