I need to get a spinning reel for a ten foot surf rod.
« on: March 27, 2011, 09:29:53 PM »
I need to get a spinning reel for my new surf rod.I'm a lady in my fifties so it can't be too heavy and I'd like to stay under $150. The rod is a tica graphite 10'.I do fish alot in both the spring and fall and would use this combo for bait. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated

Best reel I own for bait fishing is the Shimano Bait Runner .The older style 6500 can handle anything you throw from the surf. THere may be few still around new on e-bay or somewhere. Look for used on Craigslist too THe newer baitrunners from Shimano have upgrades and are over $150. The Penn metal SS series has been around forever.THey are in your price range. The 750SS,850SS,or 950SS would be your choice. If you would consider used but not abused in nice shape. I have one to sell. PM sent

Fishing, with me, has always been an excuse to drink in the daytime.

If your looking for something that is straight forward and will stand up to the surf with no bells and whistles I would recommend any pf the Penn spinning reels.  I have  10' Tica and I have a Penn 560 Slammer that I have used for years now with no troubles at all.  It is the bull dog of spinning rods.

Don't get me wrong the other reels are good but I find that the bait runner is not a useful tool in the surf, especially when the waves are pounding the beach.

Good luck in your selection.

Call me crazy, but wouldn't the baitrunner feature be a useful tool in the surf for livelining bunker?

i'm calling you crazy  ;D LOL

Yes, it is good for livelining bunker BUT from a boat.....it's a gimmick feature anyway.

Probably the most popular reel sold for deadsticking bait from the surf. ;)

Not the same. Livelining=live bait swimming with no resistance from a locked up reel.

Deadsticking=put the rig out and you can let it go unattended (in a pole holder or whatever)...or...just sitting there with dead bait, strip bait, etc on it.

Either way, when the fish (your target ;D) picks up the bait, either dead or live, your reel is in free spool and giving no resistance for the fish to feel. You then 'lock up' the reel and set the hook on the fish.

So, two different thing but the same.  ??? ;D

IMO, dead sticking simply means that your putting your rod and reel into a rod holder and not holding it.

The only reason I don't like bait runners for live lining is that you are paying for something you can do by just leaving the bail open and holding your fingers on the reel.  With the wave action the surf can produce I would rather allow my touch and feel to do the work instead of trying to allow the reel doing the work.

I can see using it on a boat for allowing the bait to roam.  But the surf is a bit different.

I will add, you can dead stick while live lining with a live lining reel.  TT^

But why would you want to???

Because I AM L-A-Z-Y (or tired) (or don't want to set up on the fish too soon after he takes the bait) ;D slt
