My first trip with my own boat
« on: April 10, 2011, 08:41:38 PM »
I bought my first boat back in December to take my adopted sons fishing, something they dreamed of doing one day.  Nothing fancy just a used 20 foot open bow.  Since then I have spent money on everything anyone told me I might need.  I read books and watched on line videos.

But nothing helped me as much as this website.  I have taken everything in and have asked a few questions, and researched old threads.

Well today my one son and I launched for the first time at Barnegat Municipal dock.  Got a reduced rate season pass from the guys there, awesome start!  I have to admit I was a little nervous, would we flub the launch, would the boat start, would I forget the plug in?

But all went well, we had her int he water and the engine started in about 10 minutes. If you were on the bay today, I was the one going granny speed while I got my feel for the boat!

We ended up at the mouth of Oyster Creek, went up the river a little bit with not even a bite.  We came back down just at the mouth of the creek, and sure enough we landed 2 fluke of keeper size.

I just wanted to share in case you all rememberer your first time out, the nervousness and the fun!

Only mistake I made was forgetting to raise the engine before I pulled the trailer out of the water, but just dug a little dirt, no biggie!

Thanks to everyone for your posts the past few months and helping me and my son have a great maiden trip!!!   Can't wait for more, thanks again guys.

Early to bed…early to rise…fish all day…make up lies.

Great report.... t^ t^

We've all been there, it's just a part of the learning curve...Like others have said.. take it slow and easy till you get the hang of it.

you gota be all eyes and try to see a problem before it becomes one.

Looking forward to more reports this summer ;D

Congrats on a successful maiden voyage, and the beginning of living the dream!  clp  With the obvious common sense and respect for the water that you have already shown, I have no doubt you'll do just fine. Many years of fun and safe passage to you and your family sir  chrz  chrz

Your first successful trip as captain really is something to remember.  I have been on boats all my life, yet it still was terrifying and thrilling the first time I was at the helm of MY boat.  Sounds like you had an awesome successful trip with your boy.  They'll remember them forever as I have the trips with my dad.

If I just have one small piece of advice, it shouldn't take 10 minutes to get the engine started.  It sounds like it ran just fine once it was running, so it's likely a simple fix like your primer bulb or choke.  Might want to get that checked out.
The cure for everything is salt water: sweat, tears, and the sea.

You are off to a great start. You will never stop learning as long as you are boating. As others have said, keep it slow and steady. If you do get into trouble the consequences will be reduced many times.

If others are trying to hurry you along, don't get flustered and rush things. That's when bad things happen. If they are that impatient, let them get ahead of you at the ramp, etc. Don't make their impatience cause you to make bad decisions.

It is supposed to be fun, keep it that way and you will have some great experience with your kids.  t^
