Water pump!
« on: April 11, 2011, 06:38:12 AM »
This isn't the first time I replaced one but the first time on this motor. Dropped the lower unit with no problems. Taking pump housing off one of the bolts shears off. This isn't good. Sprayed it down with penetrating oil. Let it soak. Tried an easy out with no luck. My previous job I had lots of experience removing broken studs, bolts, taps etc. Figure I had 3 choices. Open the hole up and either use a heli-coil, JB Weld or open the hole up more, tap it, lock tight a stud in then grind it off flush, drill and tap that to the correct size. Going to try the JB Weld first. If I can torque it the same as the other 3 bolts I will let it go. If not will go with one of the other options. Will keep you up to date on my success or failure. Anyone have any other ideas would like to hear them.  :headscra:

Update. Drilled and tapped the JB Weld material. Put the pump back together. Seemed to be able to tightened it up pretty good.

Sounds like it will work. With three origional tight, even just a little grip on the fourth should be enough. I don't see it as a problem. Good Luck <'((((><
I've spent most of my life fishing, the rest I've just wasted     <'((((><

Frank, it happens. Glad to see you tackled it. Wait til you see what those 4 little parts that were tie wrapped in the box cost. When ya get a tight bolt, always use a small ratchet so there is very little leverage to turn and break it. Tap the bolt head. Turn to loosen it a bit. Turn to tighten it. Back and forth, gently. Tap it a few more times. PB Blaster is great shop stuff.
Some times it just breaks. Stainless is soft stuff.
