Dealing with 'others'....
« on: April 25, 2011, 07:52:58 PM »
Dear fellow fishermen and women, I had an unfortunate encounter with a few very rude surfers on the water today and wonder if it's just me or have some of you experienced activity as I did? What had happened was that my 10 year old and I went fishing and got to a spot where there where no surfers. I purposely searched for a stretch of beach where there was nobody to bother and thought I found that spot. Well, after about 40 minutes of dunking clams these three teens, I guess, came to the same stretch of beach and proceeded to get into the water after I asked them to please respect the fact that we were there first. I can't express to you all how angry I got and if it were not for my child I would have been writing this from jail. I grew up fishing and surfing and I NEVER would encroach on another persons spot even it was a choice one. I find this lack of respect and decency just appalling. It makes me sad to think that there is so little in the form of human decency and a wicked sense of entitlement to something we are supposed to share and enjoy.  I hope for better days and learned that I really should pick a better spot that shows no promise of interference from opposing parties. Sorry for the rant and thank you for 'listening'.

I had the same problem several times last year.  I had to pack up and leave to avoid doing something that would get me in trouble  >:( (it would have involved their heads and an 8oz pyramid sinker)

As with anything in life, there will be those who have no consideration or respect for others.

No matter where you go or what you do there are always a few inconsiderates with no sense of courtesy at all.  Several times while diving and anchored on a wreck, with both dive flags flying,  we had boats come up and attempt to anchor while we had divers in the water.

If you were there first, IMO you have every right to keep fishing as you were. If that involves blind casting to snag bunker, ;), then by all means snag away. Just don't bite off more than you can chew especially with the little guy around. I have had many great experiences with surfers with only a few fusrtating moments like you described. Sometimes surfers are very helpful and considerate so don't prejudge. I've had many more issues with fellow fishermen pissing me off

Aloha my Bruddah, looks like we are not in Hawaii Nei any more.  It is unfortunate that these people are everywhere.  That is one of the reasons I like IBSP, not to much trouble with surfers and if we did the anglers out number them so they stay in line pretty much.

I am glad to see you had your son out.  How did he like it except for the experience with the rif raf.

I guess stink eye did not work... cfzd

That's where I've had all my issues with surfers.   5hrug   What makes that even more frustrating is that they drive on with Mobile Sport Fishing permits for the sole purpose of surfing and the park officials put on blinders.

just put a large, sharp, bunker snagger on your rod and start casting.  Eventually, they will get the "point"...

To all that responded THANK YOU! For your advice and support. All in all the incident taught me a good lesson find the water with more cuts and you'll probably find no surfers. Just hurt that I also consider myself a surfer and I would never have done that to someone.
