If you never caught an albie or bonito-Make this the year
« on: July 23, 2007, 06:18:30 PM »
If you have never caught an albie or bonito, make this the year to do it.Get a bucket of chum and chum lightly(mix with lots of seawater)and keep spicing the slick with spearing. There are lots of spearing around and my sons already seined a 5gallon bucket in half an hour.Any of the back bay beaches will produce. These fish will come into the slick and start picking up the spearing.Fish with small 1/0 2/0 hooks making sure to hide the hook.Fluro is a good idea as the fish have great eye sight.Hold on as line peels off
your reel. The runs are never ending.Start the slick on areas that you would fish for bluefish.17 fathoms, the Mud buoy,Barne Ridge.
This is very exciting fishing and they are on their way.If you guys are catching them, give me a holler.

Thanks Ross,

Great tip,  now only if I can chum the surf.

Hey Capt. Ed, idea here.  What attracts blues to a school of bunker?  could part of the lure be the sound they make as a large mass and could it be recorded and reproduced to lure fish to the boat or surf via aqua phone?

Just wondering...

Happy Catching

If you are going to chum for them, better bring A LOT of hooks because 99.9% of the run-offs you will get will be bluefish.

You will know when you get the bonita or Albie tho :)

i pick them up at the mudbouy, since your using small bait, the bluefish wont bother you to much with them.  They are great to catch.  your boat should be big enought to get to the mudbouy on a nice day..

Piggy, we can take my boat to mudbuoy or wherever they are closer in and you will get tons of bluefish chumming for bonita!

you won't get tons of bluefish chumming bonita, you will chum live killies and cut spearing... the slick will not be thick enought to attract bluefish.  Bluefish you chum very heavy, bonita and albies, you chum lightly...  handfull of live killies.. they will dart towards the boat and you will see flashes..

You do that when tyou see them breaking and know they are in the area.

You can't just camp out in an area you think they are and start throwing out killies and spearing.

That works in Fl with a shallow wreck or something, but not in 50' of water around here.

Check out the new issue (August 2007) of SaltWater Sportsman magazine. Good article on fishing for bonito, false albacore (little tunny) and skipjack tuna in New York Harbour.  t^

I am not telling you this because i am guessing.... I am telling you this because I have done it many, many times and it works.  If your looking for advice on how to catch a certain species of fish, then take the advice that is given to you and not challenge it.  YES, I HAVE SAT AT THE MUD BOUY IN LATE AUGUST, SEPTEMBER AND HAVE CHUMMED UP MANY, BONITA, AND ALBIES.  If you don't want to use this tactic that works for me, then don't.

How many killies do you bring and how many do you throw out at once while chumming with them?

How do you choose a location to start chumming with the killies or small amounts of spearing?
