BOOYAH BABY! 1st catch of the year!
« on: July 27, 2007, 08:27:06 PM »
After an insanely long dry spell I finally settled down, listened to the guys actually catching fish, and got that first catch of an almost embarrassing year. Out on the 8th st. jetti in Avalon. Stopped at the bait shop and asked what was biting and on what. Left with some mullet and a spoon for blues. Nothing. Walked past a guy with 4 LARGE flouder and some nice weakies. Asked him what he was using and he said "Bubblegum Sparkle Finnis" (sp?). This is the same thing people have been telling me not to use and I had some in my box for about 3 years. Last night I got some good old bucktails and some new heads for my bubblegum and off I went. As a sidebar, I also noted the tide table, and got done work appropriatly. I like lure fishing, seems more sporting to me. I tried the bucktail and nothing hit. I told myself listen to the guy who is taking fish home. So Iput the bubblegum on and it barely hit the water and bang first catch. It was a small blue but enough to get me out of my funk. One guy comes running up next to me, casts and got a bigger blue. Mine being about 14' and his about 18". So, new body on the head, cast out, another hit. hooked a shad but the thing jumped off the hook. Cast out, and I got the shad again. Actually got it on land so it counts as catch number 2. This all happened in about 10 minutes. Then, like a dummy, I let my reel backlash and I had such a friggin mess after about 5mins. I just cut the snag off, relured and tried to get #3. But that quick it was over. So I tried for another 1/2 hour and went home happy that I had a story and a fish in the bucket. Can't wait to try again next week.
I think I could be a really good people person if wasn't for the people.

I'm not catching any more fish, but I'm starting to learn why I'm not catching any more fish.

Good job Greg.  It pays to look and listen.  If someone is catching, try to do what he is doing and use what he is using, he is catching for a reason.

Good catching in the future.   t^

Great job Greg,

I like using artificial lures as well.  A buddy of mine went out kayaking Thursday back by the sedge island of Barnegat Inlet.  He used small poppers and caught 2 blues, 3 stripers and a weakfish.  Not bad for a little paddling.  I will be looking into this kayak stuff soon.  If I can get into one I might buy one.

Happy Catching

About a month ago I saw a guy down by the Big Bridge on Avalov Blvd. getting all his stuff ready to go fishing on his kayak. At first I thought it was kind of silly but then I figured he could probably get to alot of different places that some couldn't. I often wondered what might be back in the marshy trails around the bay. Might be cool to try, I'm not sure about doing that alot though.
I think I could be a really good people person if wasn't for the people.

I'm not catching any more fish, but I'm starting to learn why I'm not catching any more fish.
