7/6 Granddad and grandson combo trip
« on: July 06, 2011, 06:46:58 PM »
Today I had Bill and his 10 year old grandson Bill out for a bay/ocean combo trip. This was to be the younger Bills first ocean trip ever. The plan was for action and not really worrying about putting meat in the box as long as the rods were bending. The morning greeted us with light winds and fog as were headed down the bay. I have not had to use the radar much this season but sure is nice to have on the days you need it. A short stop in the bay for fluke and blues only provided a few hits so we push right out to the ocean. Flat calm seas and more fog out on the ocean. We were not sure how the younger Bill was going to handle the  ocean so I checked out some real nearshore stuff. Turned out to be all we needed. The younger Bill did great landing the first 3 keeper seabass. Granddad Bill got off to a slow start due to taking tons of pictures and smiling but joined right in nailing plenty of fish. I was really just hoping for fast action with the shorts but was really happy to some nice quality come up.The guys plugged right away filling up a full 5 gallon bucket and releasing big numbers of shorts before it was time to head back to the bay. The bay bite was very disappointing and only produced a few small fish. The tide was not the best but it should have been a better bite. The guys will have have long memories and some great story's from today not to mention some great pics. Final count for the table was 18 keeper seabass and 2 fat ling and done by lunch. Of course the 10 year old Bill caught the biggest fish of the day with a sweet 21" jumbo knucklehead to make a perfect ending to a wonderful day.
