shark river

i previously fluked shark river with the rental boats using killies with out success. any tips?

I don't fish the river but I do pass many boats that do. Most that catch are using small jigs with gulp or strip bait. Many short fish in the river to pick thru to get a keeper. I believe an outgoing tide drags a lot of seaweed thru the river too. 

Fish with a heavy enough jig head to hold bottom and then it's a constant bounce, bounce, bounce, bounce, bounce.

I fished SR today only because we got a late start and had my youngest son with us who tends to turn green outside. Fishing the river is influenced by the tides. Today we caught fish on bucktail Killie combos, My wife prefers dragging bait so I rigged her up with a traditional fluke rig with a 2 oz sinker,also caught fish on jigs tipped with Gulp. I have had my boat slipped in SR for 10 years now and I am still learning some different spots thanks to some guys in my marina because they fish inside the inlet 90% of the time. Alot of people limit themselves to the inlet side east of Route 71. There are a lot of prime spots in the back bay. If this was your first time don't be discouraged it takes time to learn an area. Keep your tackle equipment on the lightside and keep it simple. There are a lot of small fish but there are trophy fish pulled from the area every year as well.
