I love this time of the year, there are just so many available species to be had, sometimes it's hard to choose which ones to chase. Yesterday the decision was Sharks.
Started out in the deep water , bluefish were home, looks good, chum slick started. 45 min in, first shark spotted, then gone. A little while later, another spotted close to the boat, again, never to be seen again. Next visitor was a very cool ocean sunfish.
A few refreshing beverages later, a run off, then gone. Not long after, a run off on our far out,deep bait, hooked! We let Frank fight it, as this was his very first Shark. A 6 1/2 ft Blue to the boat. He wanted to keep it, something about making Shark leather and mounting the jaws.
It was legal, I was against it, but, it being his first one, I gave in. I just hope he does not try to eat the thing.
Next up was a 9 ft Blue , right up the chum slick to the boat. Tossed him a bait,and he was on it, hooked up ! As lance was clearing the other rods, he came tight on our medium depth bait. Seems the shark ate that one on his way up the slick to the boat, without popping the float or pulling drag. He was now hooked on two rods. One quickly broke and the fight was on.
Lance put it to him for for a 45 minute battle, which had him up to the boat then back down deep 3 times, until the 4th and final time, he was done and let us release him. Seas were starting to build, wind blowing, called it a day and headed for the inlet. Not the Mako we were after, but still a fun and exciting day on the water. <'((((><
