Wreck trip in near future...
« on: July 17, 2011, 08:48:38 PM »
Hows everyone?
Had my dad and his girlfriend out on the boat today. It kills me to have that pink fishing pole on there but some how she seems to catch plenty of fish with it. We worked the channel in front of the naval pier along with some spots around the hook. Managed 3 keepers. I'll take it compared to the thousands of shorts caught this year fcp I even caught my top fluke ever... Nice 26inch, 6 pounder. I know a lot of people may catch that every day they go out but I was pretty damn excited about it!  chrz my dad wants to do some wreck fishing for black sea bass on Saturday and I was wondering if anyone had any tips. I made a trip out to the Shrews Rocks last year but wasn't very successful on catching a lot of fish. Are there any other wrecks or spots around I should try. I am out of Atlantic Highlands Marina. Also, whats the bait of choice for these suckers?
Thank you everyone in advance and fish on!

I'm a big fan of sea bass fishing around Sandy Hook as well, as I actually prefer the meat over fluke. From your way I would head around the hook and down to Sandy Hook Reef. I've had good luck just finding the rock piles that seem to be most plentiful on the Western third of the reef. You should be able to find the boundaries of the reef on your chart and GPS.
My personally bait of choice is squid strips. Small pieces, about 1"x2". I have heard clam works just as well, but I've never tried it. This year I seem to be hitting many more shorts than keepers, but they're certainly out there.
