great job cappy. i love little fish on super light tackle. i use an ultra light set up there most of the time with 15lb braid, its a blast. i want to get one of those micro shiamo set ups though. gthe rod is like mabey 5 foot and the reel is the size of a golf ball. it could be fun with a 28inch bass, lol.

Hi Ya'all,

I just checked one of my Ultra Lights i used for freshwater and it is a Shakespeare 4' 6" SP 46-1UL with a Shakespeare LXul reel with what looks like 4# test mono.  I caught some real nece Large Mouth with this outfit.

I guess I will have to give it a try in salt one day over at the bridge.

Fished off of the bridge from 1400-1630.
Wish I could get there at that time during the week but my boss wouldn't like it!  I have been told by the "boss" that she wants to go tomorrow nite, so maybe I'll see some of you there after work.

I was thinking about heading down to the bridge after work tomorrow.
Has anyone been there recently or know if there's anything going on.
I'm just trying to figure out if it's worth my trip down there.

Drove by the Bridge today!  About 5 people fishing, but I don't know if they were catching.

Good Luck!

I would think that the general mix of bottom fish are still holding around there.

Don't know if you went but I haven't seen many people fishing there the times I go by (make that 1 car parked in lot over 3 days). Hard to tell if there is anything there or not but at least it wouldn't be crowded

Questions about flounder:

Can they be caught here?
When is the best time?
What should I use?
Anything else I need to know?

I'm looking to broden my fishing horizens by trying to catch as many different species as possible this year and this would be a good place to start. Thanks in advance.

I think you have as good of a chance at the Mantoloking Bridge as you do anywhere else from shore.  The only thing that is difficult to achieve from shore that is much more effective by boat is chumming, but I have seen it done.  There was a guy years back who would chum up the Inlet/River around the bend by the park there.  He was very successful and so was everyone else who fished nearby him.  You had to fight for a spot anywhere near him.

Check out the front page article.  It basically sums it up.  Light tackle will do the trick.  Setups are very basic.  You don't need anything heavy duty at all.  Clam or bloodworms work well for bait.  I have used squid strips too before.

Good Luck!

Fished the bridge 3 times this past week and here are the reports:

Tuesday July 14, 2009: Used squid strips and spearing from 10:00 am until about noon and caught one short fluke about 14".

Wednsday July 15, 2009: Used squid strips and spearing from 10:00 am until about 1:00 pm and caught nothing.

Friday July 17, 2009: Used squid strips and spearing from 9:30 am until about 12:30 pm and caught 4 short fluke. One super short at 8", two around 14", and one real nice 17.5".

Heres some cell phone pix, also besides the fluke I caught about 10-15 crabs on my rod. The ones that were keepers I gave to some guys crabbing around me.

Nice going gymrat...Glad you are still trying that spot.  I think the more you use it the more you will find the holes around it.  Plus night fishing off it and fishing the shadows is also good.  Just use the light to your advantage the fish will be in the shadows.

Happy Catching

This is an excellent spot to fish light tackle.  You can catch weakies, stripers, blues, fluke and flounder. With tons of crabs.  It is the time and season you fish it is what you will catch.  A fun place to fish

Welcome Tossinplugs,

I agree as it is one of the spots that is easy access and fisherman friendly.  ZI like it in the mid Spring as the water heats up pretty fast back there.

Maybe I will see you there as I often try to make it there a few times a year.

Happy Catching
