Saved a sinker and some seriou safety issues
« on: August 01, 2011, 09:48:03 PM »
On Saturday, A guy came into the marina abit frantic reporting his buddies 1984 20' Baha [I/O ] was taking on water down at Mott's Creek Inn and if I had a trailer that I could haul him out with?
By luck my service trailer was empty and away I went. Got to the ramp next to Mott's and the pumps were doing a good job but water already made it as high as the spark plugs. We got it loaded on my trailer and pulled the bilge plug.
The boat was in pretty nice shape.
What did I find? The drive shaft bellows had come off of the gimbal housing. It will sink you that fast.
Once at the yard I raised the engine hatch to give it a good dose of fresh water, as the owner went to fetch his trailer,  and observed a couple of things that could Kill you
The blower was there and it even turned on but there were NO HOSES connected to it. NICE!!!
Somebody rigged an in-line fuel filter with 2 small pieces of rubber fuel line right before the Holly carb. Nice again. How about a one piece Stainless fuel line from the pump to the carb? A much better option.
Found the nice 4 blade stainless Apollo prop not fully tightened on the prop shaft.
Serious steering play in the gimbal ring and swivel shaft.

I mentioned this to him and he said he was new to the boating thing and that he got the boat for $1200. and put some money into it as he had the interior re-done. He also said he knew about the missing vent hoses. 5hrug nosmly

Total negligence on the owners behalf.. New boaters need to know some practical maintenance techniques, Having interior fixed up before the boats  mechanicals looked at is a bad sign. Safety comes first. If your not knowledgable in how boats work, Spend a few bucks to have the vessel surveyed or checked out by a marina prior to purchase.

Can you imagine that people like this boat owner are at the fuel dock fueling up,,or running an inlet ,or in the same channel ,or docking the boat next to you,or even on  the water ... rgmn
The best thing they EVER passed was mandatory Boating Safety Classes. This guy must have been in the bar instead. smk :headscra: rofla
Thanks for letting me vent.... t^
