Hook question
« on: August 21, 2011, 12:28:38 PM »
Can anyone help me out on this one?

I am in need of some hooks to change on some lures. I have to take off the treble hooks and replace it with a single hook. The hook I need cannot have a gap larger then 1/2". I have Gamakatsu siwash hooks in size 1 that will work, but I am looking for something a little stronger. Is it safe to say that if I buy a size 1 hook in a different style or brand that it will have an 1/2" gap?

Thanks
Rick

Rick,

I assume this is to comply with the regulations somewhere?

Depending on the size of the lures, you could try the 2/0 Gamakatsu Live Bait hooks. The gap is 1/2" and they are very strong.  I usually reserve the 2/0s for baiting with spearing for bonito and albies.  I use the larger sizes (up to 5/0) on small metals and plugs, and 5/0 to 9/0 for assist hooks.

Take a look at the VMC SiWash hooks. The are very strong.
