Safety certificate and First Aid/cpr course
« on: August 31, 2011, 01:51:22 AM »
Just received my Capt. license re-newal and I was told some time ago you can send a copy to the State Police and they will send you a Boating Certificate with out the need to take a course and test. True? If so, who to contact? If not, any courses down my way in Little Egg? First aid/cpr course?
Thanks.

A person holding a current United States Coast Guard operator’s(captains) license, who is otherwise required to possess a boat safety certificate, may operate a power vessel on the waters of the State of New Jersey without having completed a boat safety course approved by the Superintendent of the New Jersey State Police, provided that they have their captains license in their possession while operating.

The operators license can not be converted to a New Jersey boat safety certificate.

I believe they must have a charter on board also and not a 'crew/fun' trip.

A charter trip is not necessary in order to operate a vessel in NJ waters if you have your USCG License on board as this would serve in lieu of your boating safety card/certificate according to the NJ State Police Marine Bureau as they want to be assured you have either readily available to display if asked.

Thanks for the info. As I'm always out test running different boats, there is always a chance of forgetting and or losing my ticket. I'd much prefer to have a Boating Safety Cert. in my wallet than carry my License. I guess I'll just take a Boating Safety Course to get the card.
In regards to cpr/first aid courses, any recommendations?
Thanks

Matt,
Look at the American Red Cross or the American Heart Association in your community for the Adult First aid and CPR courses. Keep in mind the Online First aid and cpr courses are not recognized by the USCG, it must be done in person.

Similar to doing our Mariners Learning System program, you do the program online but you must take your final exam in person.
Good Luck!

Capt.Adam who owns and operates the Karen Ann II charter boat here in Little Egg sent me a link to classes held at Stockton College. It looks exacly what I'm looking for. Refresher cpr/first aid for the professional.
