Gulp! 6" Swimming Mullets

I know a few of you have tried these since they've come out.  What do you think?  The retail cost on these is $6.49 o $6.99 per pack of three.  That's over $2.00 a piece!  Are they worth it?

I've used the 6" Grub (which have four in a pack for the same money and didn't really see any significant difference over the four inch, other than it hurt more when they bit off the tails.

What do you guys think about them?

 Sounds a little stiff to me. I wouldn't pay it. They should come with replacement tails!!

That's my question.  Have you been catching bigger fish on the 6" than you have on the 4"?

You catch big fish on both but the bigger 6" eliminates a lot of the shorts. My theory is if I'm wasting my time reeling up shorts then my bait is not in the water for the bigger fish.  Normally when you hook up with bigger bait it's a keeper.

Bob, I love with the 4" versions.. run as a teaser above the bucktail, I bet they account for better than 90% of my fluke.. and are absolutely crack on the c-bass.. so I could'nt resist trying a jug of the 6" mullets.. I mail-ordered them and had'nt seen them in the flesh.. I was kinda startled by their actual size..especially the girth.  I don't doubt that a big fluke would gobble'em ( and of course being the pigs they are,  I've caught a few so small  that they would have died of suffocation if they had been able to get them in their mouths  )  but I have'nt gotten to use them much so far..I've caught a few fish using them as trailer on the jig, but  I find the plastic is so thick, it fills most of the gape, even on a 6oz. spro.. I'm planning on trying them as a teaser, but need to pick up some bigger hooks to rig them..  even the 4 and 5/0's I usually use disappear in these things.. So as far as if they are worth it,  my jury is still out with my limited use , but I can tell you this.. the fish will certainly still pull off the tails.. albeit with a frequency commensurate the baits size.. meaning, I find the bigger the bait, the more tugs it takes.. but the seabass still wreak havoc on them..

i usually use medium sized baits like the 4" swimming mullet on my dead stick and i will use the 6" on my bucktail rig.....i VERY rarely get a short on the 6"


i like them...the cost stinks but ya got to pay to play

I just started using gulp with a limited amount of success.

As to cost, hhe way I see it Chris, one gulp minnow will allow me to catch numerous fish before it has to be replaced. Put squid strips on and you typically feed the fish more than you are catching them. Thus, always replenishing your squid supply. One squid tube at $5 doesn't last too long. One gulp mullet can last a long time and catch many fish. I would go as far as to say that one gulp mullet will last just as long, if not longer, as one squid tube would last.

I use the 4" as well.  6" is too costly for only 3 in a pack.  Especially when there's snappers around.  I find once they bite the tail off, the fluke don't want them anymore.

Haven't tried the new ones yet because of the price factor.  I've had real good results on the large 6" chartruese grub but can't find them of late.   Seems to me they are phasing them out with the new Mullet product to generate a quick price increase  3 count vs 4 count for the same price.  What a bargain! Bet they work well though.

Like Jason said, if there's snappers, small blues or other toothy critters around, the tails get bit off quick.  Once the tail is compromised, the bait is done. 
Not sure if this is just a surf/jetty problem.

I've used them all the 6 mullet works awsome but everything likes them ie crabs, doggies and blues. The other thing is the bait has 3 inches or more of tail to get a hook up on smaller fish is very hard and they tooth the hell out of the baits. I really like the grub also but the same goed for them. Cost wise the big jar of the jerk shad or the belly strip a3e your best deal but there a thicker bait and do have that flaily tail action. Berkely really cornerd us on this one. They finally have a product that works and they know it. They probably have the price so high to make up for all the crap power bait theve manufactured and never sold. I think that we should find out what a bulk price per would be and sell them here rod. But face it if it works well buy it. Whatever the cost like the stretch 25s or the hopkins bucktails. But back to the main question for bob I like them especially fishing deep water with 6 oz spros yeah there expensive but to me its worth it for a shot at a huge fish just know to switch it out if you start catching garbage fish or shorts I wouldn't want to waste it.

I used the 6" white Mullet yesterday for the first time on the Monger for about half the day with 6/0 hooks above my bucktails as a teaser then switched over to the 6" grub and did not notice any discernible difference in my catch or hookup ratios...

I would say 75% of my fish took the teaser in favor of the bucktail...and must admit that if there are big fluke around I would prefer the bigger teaser presentation going with the 6" over the 4" whether it be the grub or mullet.

They both catch fish there's no doubt about that and would attribute that mainly to the tail swimming action...as many have mentioned...the minute the tail is bitten off the bait is rendered useless proving that point...They do have great action in the water both the grub and mullet...

Still have 1/2 a bucket left and will give them another try before the season ends...I'm still curious to see if it will out produce the grubs and don't want to make a decision based on one trip....the jury is still out for me...

All good info here.  If I'm able to get out for fluke again this year I'll have to try them (or have someone on the boat try them while I'm using the 4") and see if there's a difference.  The way I look at it, when I rig two of the 4" in tandem (which I usually do on the larger bucktails), I'm presenting a bigger profile than if I had one 6".

Big Al, I hear you on the high price, but I have to disagree with you on the Power Bait though.  I've caught a ton of fish over the years on Power Bait.  It's good stuff.

I used to crush trout on orange Powerbait in the jar.  The mushy stuff, that you can form around your hook.  I heard it was so good because it closely matched what the trout were fed in the hatcheries before being dropped into the waters.  Not sure if there's any truth to that, but it sure worked.  Man I miss troutin'!

I'm derailing my own thread, but to clarify, my success with Power Bait was with the freshwater stuff - worms, lizards, etc. for bass.  Although I have a few packs, I haven't used the saltwater Power Bait all that much, so I'll have to take your word for it.

For freswater I have had some sucsess with them especially for trout. But salt water nada.

    Intresting topic. Has anyone tryed using other brands of twister tails ect. and soaking them in the gulp liquid. I always have the liquid left over, I'm going to try soaking renagade 6 inch curly tails and see if they work.
