Rod & Reel Cleaner
« on: October 08, 2011, 08:01:02 PM »
I'm sure we all have our way of keeping our rods and reels clean after an enjoyable day on the water...

Ok...Do you use and products (like Penn Rod & Reel Cleaner) at the end of the day? Or just soap and water...

Thoughts....

I just have them sprayed by my crew after the trip. Which explains why I am replacing my stuff every year.  ;D

A fine spray of freshwater is all you really need at the end of the day.  Just make sure you spin all the excess water out and dry off all the external parts.  If you are storing them in your house you don't need to do anything else other than adding a drop of oil here and there.  If the reel got a major dose of salt spray you may want to open the side plate and pop the spool out to make sure you got all the salt out, and add a drop or two of oil inside as well.

This is basically all I do with my reels after a trip.  And if you ask anyone that fishes with me, they will tell you my reels are immaculate.

The reason why people like Joe and Rod have trouble with reel corrosion (and why I have repaired both of their reels) is that, most of the time, the reels are being put away wet and stored on the boat.  For people that do this, I recommend spraying the outer surface of the reel with Reel Magic or a Silicone spray.  It will help protect the outside of the reel.  Of course, if the inside remains wet, the bearings and such will still corrode (freshwater or not).

As Bucktail said, leaving them on the boat is not good for them.  :P

Hello,

I spray with fresh water from a hose than a good scrubbing with dish detergent on a very soft brush and thorough rinse. I also started using line butter on my reels with mono line and it seems to keep the line soft and in good shape. I then put the reels in a box to keep the mono out of any light.

Be sure NOT to blast them with water!!!! Don't go full bore on the hose nozzle.  Just a delicate spray.
