Scientists from Rutgers University are continuing their black sea bass research project in 2012 and are offering rewards to fishermen for the return of tagged black sea bass. They have now tagged over 1100 black sea bass and 159 recaptures have been reported.
If you catch a black sea bass with a tag they would greatly appreciate the return of the whole fish with guts intact and tag attached. Please place it in the refrigerator, and call 800.776.6537 or send an email to blackseabassproject@gmail.com to arrange a pick-up. Tag returns by themselves are helpful, but not nearly as valuable as returned fish.
They will have some pots on the wrecks and artificial reefs off of Little Egg Inlet that will be clearly identified as Rutgers pots. Fish captured in these pots will be tagged and released.
