Snappers for Big Fluke-It Works
« on: August 13, 2007, 08:03:36 AM »
We took a 20 gallon garbage can and cut holes in it for water flow.Put a swim noodle around it and put 20 live snappers in the can for the next days fishing.Next morning we got the live well going on the boat and proceeded to the Seagirt Reef.No fancy rigs just a three way and a good hook.Snappers through the lips and dropped them around the junk.Had 12 fluke to 5.5 pounds and lost what must have been at least an 8lber.Best fluking I had in years.Be careful to keep in mind that the number of snappers you carry is subject to bluefish regulations and bag limit.

Nice report Ross.  Great tip on how to keep the snapper at the dock.  I think I'll have to give it a try.   t^

Good to know.  What size were these snappers?

Nice catch.

A week ago snappers were not producing at the Sea Girt Reef.

My preferred rig for fishing snappers is such; 12" piece of #30 leader material with a high quality barrel swivel at one end & a 4/0 Gamakatsu octopus hook snelled to the other. On my main line I'll place a plastic sleeve fish finder before tie the other end of the barrel swivel to my main line.

The reason why I use a short leader is because with a longer leader you give the snapper a greater chance of swimming away from the jaws of Mr. Fluke.

I'll also fish a snapper the the reel in freespool, keeping my thumb on the spool. Once I feel the pick up, I'll drop back soem line, place the reel in gear, I'll give it another second or two for the fluke to get the biat in it's motuh and then drive home the steel  ;D.
