lumps vs ridge
« on: March 28, 2007, 07:00:54 PM »
i read alot about catching tuna, bonito and such at the east lumps, but hardly ever hear about the barneget ridge, which would be alot closer to where i'll be slipped.
granted fish will be fish,, but is the ridge less productive on average? how about along the edges of the mud hole?
looking over my charts i would more than likely have to swing in to capemay, or ac and top off fuel tank on the way out there just for good measure comin from seaside.

Hi Reel Time,

The Barnegat Ridge North (there is also a south)has been better than the edges of the Mud Hole (in general) the past 3 years. No need to duck into AC inlet or anything south of Barnegat Inlet as the Barnegat Ridge is about 18 miles or so, virtually west of the Barnegat Inlet.

That being said, we are probably fishing out of the same area (I leave Barnegat Inlet or Manasquan Inlet) and I will share any numbers/info you need.

How can I help?

Best wishes,

Capt. Ed

Sorry I don't have my own first hand knowledge of the Barnegat Ridge. I fish farther south. But I have a couple good friends that fish it and have done pretty well.

hiya capt ed, you come highly talked about by rod, and he stated the same thing, that we fish, gonna fish same areas. it will be sliped right off rt 37, on pelican island. so i also have the choice of heading north or south.

have only fished barnegat a couple times on a friends boat and that was years ago. past 2years i have fished great bay, and that was just a bay boat. so basically i am totally new to fishign the whole area, to include the ocean.

i have the homeport charts for ny to oceancity md, and have been browsing through them tryign to scout out potential spots ahead of time. also bought a new lowrance gps/ff combo, and spent the extra bucks to get the map chip which has everthing on that also, just not the names of the wrecks.

was asking about the ridge, cause if same thing can be had there i wont have to worry about trying to go to the lumps which would be a pretty long cruise that i guesstimated to be 50 or 55 nm from barnegat inlet or there abouts, cant remember now, will have to reguesstimate it.

Hi Reel Time,

There are times of the year that one cannot beat Barnegat Ridge North.

When I fish there, I also don't count out a bunch of the lumps in the area.

I am in California this week Sturgeon fishing.

I will start posting numbers when I have my notes, log books, etc. in my hand.

I think it is going to be a fun Summer fishing. The fishing is pretty good here. I am looking forward to the open of Salmon fishing on April 7. The halibut should start turning on as well in the lower Bay.

Best wishes,

Capt. Ed

welcome Reel Time.  I'm docked by the Stewarts store before the 37 bridge.... We'll have to catch up some time and go out fishing.  Capt Ed is very knowledgable of the areas outside of manasquan and barnegat...  He's taught me very valuable lessons about the water there....

thanx capt ed, i have the "home port" charts, and they are on there, found all you have listed, and damn i'm getting excited already.

for everyone else who dont have homeport charts,,, by all means get them. very nice charts. i have #6 which is from ny to great egg inlet, and out to 50 nm. with tons of bottom structure and wrecks.http://www.homeportcharts.com/chartinfo.php?id=chart6
