Bbait pen/cage?
« on: August 14, 2007, 11:55:04 AM »
Anyone know where to get an inexpensive bait pen or cage that I can store live snappers/peanuts in hanging from my boat that will keep them alive for a few days (or week).

The few I have seen have mesh netting that looks like a crap can easily get thru it or are large metal that seems like the fish can easily get thru.

Thanks.

very easy to make,  Get a cheap, large garbage pail, drill holes in it the size you need, tie a pool floating noodle around it low enough so the fish don't jump out....  PRESTO...  a bait pen...  saw that done in Florida years ago.. works great and other fish can't try to attack them like if it was a mesh pen.

I remember making those as a kid very simple design with a door on top and a twist latch made from a piece of wood.  I will try and draw one and take a picture of it and post it tomorrow.

Not really.  Put a lid on it and lock it.  The weight of the can with the bait and water in it can't be lifted like the usual collapable ones.  When you get to the dock, unlock the lid to the can, net out the bait you want and put it in the livewell, then lock the can back up.  Trust me, much, much harder to steal.

i put thought into this also.  Try lifting a garbage can fill of water and bait.. You cant do it.. way to heavy especially if you make the holes ver small.  This will be a semi permanent thing for the dock.  Make a swing attachment to the lid and a lock on top...  the only way to get the bait is to open and net the bait out..  any other way is way to difficult and time consuming for someone to steal.. but remember the good old saying.. if someone wants something bad enough,  they will get it... all you can do is make it that much more difficult for them...  ;D
