Pew praises approach but says more species should be included
Holly Binns, a project director for the Pew Environment Group, issued the following statement today in response to U.S. Commerce Secretary John Bryson’s approval of new catch limits on some species in the Gulf of Mexico. The Gulf of Mexico Fishery Management Council gave initial approval to the plans in August.
“These plans are a proactive approach and are significant for fish in the Gulf of Mexico. About two dozen species, from black grouper to gray snapper, are now protected under catch limits designed to prevent overfishing
Even the extremely abundant Mangrove snapper, the mangrove snapper, Lutjanus griseus, is a snapper in the family Lutjanidae. It is also known as the gray snapper, mango snapper, or cabellerote, "are now protected under catch limits designed to prevent overfishing"
"fact-based public-opinion polling and other research tools" Mangrove snapper are extremely abundant. Even our bays & close to shore Gulf waters are loaded with them. Off shore such areas as our own Middle Grounds, Elbow, Twin Peak, as well as virtually every ledge, wreck & rocky areas up to around 170 feet are covered with mangos. They are, simply put, extremely abundant! We who actually fish know this. Wonder how much, "fact-based 'impartial' public-opinion polling" Pew used to come to the conclusion that, "Catch limits designed to prevent overfishing," are needed for, "About two dozen species, from black grouper to gray (Mangrove) snapper? Looks like a great deal of, "Other research tools" were used!

I am sure that Pew's, "Other research tools" can, "prove" that grunts, porgy, and even pin fish are over-fished and must be, "protected!"

Guess we can expect big business, big money, and all that it brings, will be the law of the land as long as NOAA is under the Department of Commerce.
I have been fighting catch shares for years. However, properly used, it could possibly be a real tool in the management of our fisheries. Our fish, or what was once our fish, belong to the American people. Under the Department of Commerce, fish are a commodity to be bought & sold. Enter catch shares under John Bryson & Jane Lubchenco. Enter big $$$, BIG very BIG profits to be realized by the selling us, the American people, back what was once, and should be, ours to begin with, our fish. Can't afford to march down to Walmart & buy a "Share" for the privilege of catching our fish? The solution is really very simple...Don't Fish!" Remember, under Mister Bryson's, Dept. of Commerce, concept of catch shares, no shares no fishing. Catch shares, better known as fishing for only the very rich.
Possible merit can be seen in the concept of catch shares. However, we must first take the BIG $$$, BIG profit motive away from any type of fishery management, away from catch shares. Fish, our fish, are a national resource to be enjoyed by all Americans; not just the very rich.
